Common Proficiency Course (CPC) / Common Proficiency Test.

CPT is an entry level test for Chartered Accountancy Course. Student after passing class 10th examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto. Students can appear in the CPT after appearing in the senior secondary (10+2) examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto. Students after registration to the course are required to complete specified period (i.e. 60 days) from the date of registration to as on the first day of the month in which examination is to be held, i.e., students registered on or before 1st April/1st October will be eligible to appear in June/ December examination, as the case may be.

Students who are Graduates/ Post Graduates with prescribed percentage marks or its equivalent grade in the examination conducted by any recognized University (including Open University) or Intermediate level examination passed students of The Institute of Cost Accountants of India or The Institute of Company Secretaries of India are exempted from passing CPT. Such students on fulfilling the requirements can register directly to Intermediate (IPC) course.


About the Test

Common Proficiency Test comprises of four subjects i.e., Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics and Quantitative Aptitude. The Common Proficiency Test (CPT) is of 200 marks. This test is divided into two sessions of two hours each. CPT is an objective type test with negative marking.


Common Proficiency Test (CPT) examinations are held twice a year in the months of June and December. Examination Department issues notifications/announcement regarding conduct of Common Proficiency Test (CPT) in June and December every year in the months of February/August respectively on Institute’s website www.icai.org/Newspapers. The said notification contains the proposed Examination Centres, in India and abroad. After getting registered for CPT course, students are also required to fill in separate application form for appearing in CPT examination.


Common Proficiency Course (CPC) registration is valid for 3 years and can be revalidated any number of times for further 3 years period by paying revalidation fee of Rs. 300/- or as decided by the Council from time to time.


Subjects covered in CPT

SESSION – I (Two Sections – Two hours – 100 Marks)

  • Section A: Fundamentals of Accounting ( 60 Marks )
  • Section B: Mercantile Laws ( 40 Marks )

SESSION – II (Two Sections – Two hours – 100 Marks)

  • Section C: General Economics ( 50 Marks )
  • Section D: Quantitative Aptitude ( 50 Marks )

The Board of Studies issues comprehensive study materials along with Model Test Papers, covering all four subjects.


 Eligibility for Appearing in CPT Exam:

A registered student may appear in Common Proficiency Test after he has appeared in the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 examination) conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto and has complied with such requirements as may be specified by the Council from time to time.

*   Common Proficiency Test (CPT) is a centralized eligibility test to do CA course, which is conducted by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India(ICAI).

*   The test is taken after 10+2 for admission into Chartered Accountancy course.


*   The CPT test is divided in to TWO sessions; each session contains 100 objective questions.

*   Session-I contains 100 objective questions; 60 from FUNDAMENTALS OF ACCOUNTS and 40 from MARCANTILE LAW. Each correct answer carries 1 mark,      for every wrong answer ¼ mark will be deducted.

*   Session-II contains 100 objective questions; 50 from GENERAL ECONOMICS and 50 from QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE. Each correct answer carries 1 mark,        for every wrong answer ¼ mark will be deducted.

*  CPT Registration fee will be Rs.6200/- should be paid in the form of DEMAND DRAFT of any Nationalized Bank, in favour of THE SECRETARY, ICAI, CHENNAI.

*   The application and prospectus cost is Rs.100/- can be paid in cash.

*   Examination frequency – twice a year – JUNE & DECEMBER every year.

*   Last date for CPT Registration is - APRIL 4th for JUNE attempt and OCTOBER 4th for DECEMBER attempt.

*   Examination fee is Rs.1000/- can be paid in cash between APRIL 4th and APRIL 25th for JUNE attempt; between OCTOBER 4th and OCTOBER 25th        for      DECEMBER attempt.

*   Results will be announced in the last week of JULY for JUNE attempt and in the last week of JANUARY for DECEMBER attempt.


Examination Pattern:

  • There will total 200 MCQ’s carrying one mark each.
  • For Correct answer students will get one mark.
  • For Blank answers Zero marks will be awarded.
  • For Incorrect answers -0.25 marks will be deducted.


Passing Requirement:

50% of Total marks are required to qualify the CPT with 30% Marks in Each Subject. Students should secure overall 100 marks with Individual Passing as follows:

CPT Examination Schedule:

Paper pencil mode (Physical) CPT will be held twice a year: June and December.


Last Dates of Registration:

A student who has got himself registered for Common Proficiency Test 60 days prior to the first day of the month in which CPT examination is to be held can appear in the examination i.e. on or before 1st April and 1st October for appearing in CPT examination to be held in June and December respectively. Last date for June attempt is 31st March of the same year. Last date for December attempt is 30th September of the same year.


How to Register for CPT with ICAI ?

Student needs to take the prospectus containing application form from the ICAI office and submit the form along with following documents. Student may register online on ICAI website.

  • True copy of 10th Marks sheet
  • True copy of Birth date proof e.g. School leaving certificate


Registration Fees:

Rs. 6,000 payable by way of Demand draft in favor of “The Secretary, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India”, payable at Mumbai / Chennai / Kolkata / Kanpur / New Delhi.

Enclosures to Common Proficiency Course (CPC) Registration form:

  • Demand Draft towards registration fee.
  • Proof of Date of Birth: Class 10th admit card and 10th pass marks sheet/ 10th pass certificate indicating Date of Birth, duly attested by a Chartered Accountant/ Gazetted Officer/ Head of the Institute.
  • Attested copy of 12th pass or its equivalent qualification as recognized by the Central Government, if passed.
  • Proof of Nationality, if student is foreigner. (5) Proof of special category certificate i.e. SC/ST, OBC and Disabled.

CPT Registration form to be submitted to the Branches or Regional Office in consonance with the address of the student.
